WHAT IS MALARIA
Malaria is a disease caused by the blood parasite Plasmodium, which is transmitted by mosquitoes. Malaria affects mostly children under the age of five. Malaria has been brought under control and even eliminated in many parts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Yet in Africa, with increasing drug resistance and struggling health systems, malaria infections have increased over the last three decades.

MALARIA IS PREVENTABLE
Since Malaria carrying mosquitos mostly attack from dusk to dawn the best way of preventing Malaria in young children is have them sleep under an insecticide treated mosquito net. A family of four can sleep under a bed net, safe from malaria, for three years. The benefits of bed nets extend even further than protecting those sleeping underneath them. The insecticide woven into each net makes entire communities safer – killing and repelling mosquitoes so that they can’t go on to bite others who may not be protected by a net. Bed nets can reduce malaria transmissions by 90 percent in areas with high coverage rates.

YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE FOR $10
A U.N. approved safe bednet costs only $10 and is widely available in Africa, yet many of the poorest families can't afford to buy one. Help the Guinea-Bissau Maccabi Team reach its goal and deliver 2,000 mosquito nets to impoverished families in the world's poorest countries. Members of the team and volunteers will help distribute and educate the local population about the prevention of malaria and the use of bed nets. Transcend borders, religion, politics and race. Help us deliver 2,000 malaria nets by February 2014. Click here to donate!
